Choosing the Fountain That's Right for You
A water fountain can be one of the best purchases you'll ever make for your home, office, or place of business.
But how do you know which one to choose? Your selection should be based on a number of different factors. Consider these guidelines before you make a final decision:Where will the fountain be placed? Do you already have a location in mind, or do you just want to purchase a fountain and find a place for it once it arrives? It's a good idea to have an idea of where you'll put it, since that can determine what type of fountain you choose. First, decide whether the fountain will be placed indoors or outdoors. This will narrow down your choices considerably.
How large is the space? You wouldn't want to purchase a large, wide floor fountain for a studio apartment, nor would you want to place a very small wall fountain on a vast blank wall. A large wall fountain can help balance a wall with a barren feel, adding visual interest and creating a warm, inviting environment. Small garden fountains can add sparkle and life to a balcony or porch, and tabletop fountains are fitting for nearly any room. Large, formally landscaped grounds would require a grand, traditionally styled tiered garden fountain to be visually balanced.
How much traffic does the area receive? If the area where you intend to place the fountain is a large open space that people rarely walk through, your options are limitless - you could choose as large of a fountain as you like. However, if you mean to place a wall fountain in a narrow hallway, you'll need to select one that doesn't stick out from the wall too much. Look at the dimensions provided for a fountain and pay close attention to the 'depth'. This tells you how much space in the hallway it will take up.
Additionally, consider whether children will be present in that space often. You may want to choose a wall fountain that will be out of their reach, since they may be tempted to play in an easily accessible floor fountain. What style is the décor in the space? The paint colors, fabrics, patterns, and overall design style of a room can help you choose the fountain that will complete the space. Take a good look at the décor: does it have a rustic country feel? Is it very contemporary, with lots of glass and clean lines? Is there a unified theme present, such as 'nautical' or 'vintage Paris'? Use this to guide you toward a certain look in a fountain.
With the rise in fountain popularity over the last few years has come a wide range of new styles, sizes, types and colors in wall fountains, tabletop fountains, floor fountains and garden fountains - so you're sure to find one that's just right for your individual needs.Stephanie Gottschalk writes the blogs 'Picnic Fun - Tips and Recipes' and 'The Joy of Water Fountains' for Specialty Living Inc., an Asheville, North Carolina-based company that aims to share their love of people, nature and life through high quality water fountains and outdoor living products.
